Year 1 in NYC: A Recap

When I was 8 years-old, I visited New York City for the first time and decided I would live there someday. A year after officially moving to Brooklyn, I can say with certainty that it’s better than I could have imagined.

This past year has been a crazy one. I came here with no definite plans for work and ended up doing a few part-time projects until landing my current position.

When I first arrived, I spent the majority of last fall exploring my new home and reflecting on the next phase of my life. It was a blessing to have a couple of months, where even though I worked hard, I was able to do what I wanted. This was the first year I was truly on my own, and while it was difficult, it was empowering. I learned a lot about how I wanted to spend my time, who I wanted to spend it with, and what I wanted to spend it doing.

For the past 5 years, New York has been my home. I left Cape Cod for the city, went to college here, and experienced my first year of adulthood walking these streets. Every time I leave my apartment, have brunch on the Lower East Side or grab drinks with friends at a bar in the West Village, I have the same feeling I did when I visited as a kid years ago.

For me, I don’t believe I’ll ever truly be done with New York. I am forever thankful for the opportunities it’s given me and experiences I’ve had, but it may be time to look at the next chapter.

For now, I raise my glass to the last 12 months and look forward to whatever is in store for the next 12. Here’s to a city like no other.

Cheers!

xx, mm
